Yes @lelliott19 thanks for the update. While not Civil War, I just placed an order for Washington's Marines. I know firsthand how devastating a serious health crisis can be. My prayers are with Eric and his family.

Thank you to everyone who is helping out by purchasing books. Susan and I appreciate it a great deal. Come March 1, I will have been self-employed for 30 years now, and I've spent those years riding the cash flow rollercoaster. Unfortunately, this illness and all of the unexpected and unbudgeted expenses associated with it quickly wiped out our savings and available cash to pay for things. But with help from good folks like you, we're managing.

For those who are interested, I have diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkins lymphoma, which, fortunately, is a 100% curable cancer of the lymph system. I have completed four of my six scheduled rounds of chemotherapy as of last Tuesday (they are scheduled three weeks apart to permit the chemo time to work) and two of my three rounds of intrathecal chemotherapy (injecting the chemo drugs into my spinal column to keep the lymphoma from reaching my brain). The PET scan that I had last Monday shows that the cancerous lesions have all shrunk in size, meaning that the chemo is doing precisely what it's supposed to do.

Because we didn't catch it as soon as any of us would have liked, the cancer caused a great deal of damage to my left hip joint, so once I complete chemo, I will require a hip surgery to repair and reinforce the joint where the damage was done. We still don't know the full extent of the surgery that will be needed, and won't until after I complete chemotherapy. The oncologic orthopedic trauma surgeon won't even see me until I complete chemotherapy. I am fortunate to have the James Cancer Center at the Ohio State University Hospital to draw upon to continue this fight.

I will defeat this. I have too much left to see and do before my time to shuffle off of this mortal coil comes.

Catastrophic medical and related expenses is something we might think about but can never adequately prepare for. Thank you and Savas Beatie for allowing us to help as we are able. Susan's had a real burden with this, having to tend to me and four golden retrievers--I am not permitted to be weight bearing on my left leg and am stuck in a wheelchair until I have the surgery on my hip. She injured her shoulder trying to tend to our dogs since I cannot do so, and she will require a surgery to repair two completely torn and one partially torn tendon. When it rains, it pours.

I think you mentioned that she was awaiting knee replacement surgery but I had no idea she had injured her shoulder too. Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry about all of this. I wish there was more I could do. Let me know if you want to exile the dogs South for a while. I'm usually pretty handy with canines.

Yep, she needs to have both of her knees done, but that's now going to have to wait until after she gets her shoulder taken care of. She's mostly one-handed and I'm in a wheelchair. We make quite the pair. I've been home from the hospital for nearly 60 days now, and we're managing, but good grief--enough already!

We make quite the pair. I've been home from the hospital for nearly 60 days now, and we're managing, but good grief--enough already!

One doesn't appreciate the independence and freedom that walking gives us until you lose it. Twice in my life doctors said I would never walk again and I'm happy to report they were wrong. I walk with a cane and I try to hike five miles everyday. On several occasions I've hiked twenty miles in a day just to prove to myself that I could still do it. The human spirit can move mountains.

Someone once said it's a b - tch getting old and ain't that the truth.
