This cake goes back for over 100 years. This one my Granny always made. Her mother made it and her mother before that.

Burnt Sugar Cake

Put 1 cup sugar in skillet, when dissolved, add 1 cup hot water. Stir well and let cool. Makes 1 pint syrup. This will be enough for other cakes; keep in refrigerator.

Cream 1 1/2 cup sugar with 2/3 cup butter or Crisco. Add 2 eggs and cream about 2 minutes. Add a scant 1/2 cup syrup; cream 2 more minutes.

Add:

3 cups flour
1 cup water
1 tablespoon vanilla
1 teaspoon soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Bake in well greased and floured pan at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.

Burnt Sugar Icing

2 cups sugar
1 cup half and half cream
1 tablespoon sugar

Brown 1 tablespoon sugar in a pan, add cream and other sugar, stir well. Boil until thick. Soft ball stage. When almost cool beat and spread on cake.
