Lt.Arty Bronze Navy Swivel

I have a bronze swivel gun. There are no markings on the muzzle, left or right trunnions, second reinforcement, or cascabel.

It has been reported as late 18th or early 19th century

There are noticeable iron deposits at the - odd and rare square rim base.

The piece is 24" long and weighs 56 pounds. The bore flare is 1 1/2" although the shot size is 1 3/16"

Looking for expert recognition. This is not a British or French piece as I have already coordinated with artillery museums in both countries

Good luck. Many ships had these in abundance back then. I have one about 300 years old with the swivel still attached. It was a fresh water find in the Rhine River, Germany. It could be from any European country or even US made.

It appears to be an HG Cordes from Bremerhaven Germany - although, without foundry or proof marking, this is a guess due to similar features on later (Hermann Gerhard Cordes) lifesaving line throwing mortars.

I've owned small bronze guns with square rimbase, which were probably Russian.

They are pictured in the Divine, now Morphy auction catalogs from my cannon auctions in 2014/5. The guns rhemselves bear no resemblance, only the rimbases.

Weren't these popular in boats going west with mountain men and trappers? Even wagons mounted small guns on their sides. Let us know what you find out.

Yep, swivel guns were not unique to naval warfare.
Such weapons were sometimes used as defensive armament in land based actions.

After all ... it's the ultimate shotgun.
