Bayonet with unusual mark

I help in a museum as an apprentice conservator. I came across this mark: US with what looks like crossed arrows. The head conservator hadn't seen a mark like this before, so we are temporarily at a loss. Might even be post-Civil War. I've also enclosed a picture of the socket to help with identification. Any thoughts?

As far as I know the meaning of the crossed arrows is unknown, but presumably it represents the maker.
The bayonet is a US M1835 for use on Model 1840 and 1842 Muskets.
