Recent Find Another new Burnside thread

Seems like the Burnside carbine has been a popular topic lately. Consequently, I just figuratively pulled the trigger on one this past Saturday. It should ship tomorrow (Tuesday) and hopefully show up this week. I'm kind of fired up about it since I haven't gotten anything new since February.

It's a 5th model with good wood with two readable cartouches, lots of bluing left, a healthy bit of case color on the lock, hammer, and frame, and according to the seller--an excellent almost mint bore.

Here is the actual listing info

A U.S. Civil War Military Issued Fifth Model Burnside Carbine In Excellent Untouched Condition. All original and complete. Serial #11,9XX, all matching numbers. All original and complete. The carbine has excellent metal, markings, and edges. It is U.S. Sub Inspected on the parts. The barrel, and top of the block retains most of their original factory blue on it. The top strap and lever retain lots of their original blue with the balance fading to a plum brown. The frame, hammer, lever, and butt plate all retain most of their original factory case colors which are darkening in some small areas. All of the screws are fine with blue on them. The wood is excellent throughout with nice edges. It has two clear U.S. Inspectors Cartouches on the back side of the wood. It has an excellent bright bore and a tight action. This Is An Excellent And Very Untouched U.S. Civil War Military Issued Fifth Model Burnside Carbine!

These are the listing photos--only 4 profile shots but with the description and then talking to the seller on the phone I felt good enough to commit. He also came down $195 off the listing price and covered shipping and insurance.

I'll post some new photos when it arrives--hopefully by the end of the week. I went a little over my budgeted retirement pay grade to get one this nice but it was still a grand less than anything else I had looked at--that was remotely close to this condition level.

@ucvrelics. Thanks so much for the list My serial number is between 11981 and 11990. Actually only one digit lower than 11990.

Does that mean that it had a good chance of belonging to the 2nd Texas. Oddly there is both a 2nd Texas cavalry in the Union army and also in the Confederate army. Neither appears to have the word "volunteer" in their title.

No it doesn't as if its not listed in the SRS its not listed and that is the yankee 2nd Texas not CSA

I have a rough looking Burnside that I am currently restoring as a shooter. My NSSA teammates verbally abuse me about it saying "Go ahead, but it won't shoot worth a ****!" However, I have an ongoing "Love / Hate" relationship with my repro (Yek) Smith Carbine. Although they don't appear in large numbers at most matches, I do occasionally see Burnsides on the firing line during Nationals. From my observations, their reputation as "finger pinchers" is well deserved. Something akin to the M1 Thumb.

Yours looks to be in about the same condition as mine. Is it the Model of 1864 version?

Shooting a .562 round ball, they are quite accurate. Never had my thumb pinched though, so not sure what that's all about.

That's the one thing I didn't think to ask about. I had acquired a paperback version of Edward Hull's book on the Burnside prior to looking for one and knew about the variation in marking. I guess it will be a surprise when it arrives.

The Burnside is an interesting carbine as there were 5 different versions (models) and restarts in the serial # so they can be confusing.

Just a small update. The carbine arrived late yesterday via UPS in fine order. It is stamped as the Model of 1864 and appears to be just as advertised by the seller. It's rainy and overcast here today with tomorrow forecasted to be the same. It's supposed to be clear and partly sunny on Monday so it will be then before I can get some decent light for pictures. I may try to fool around with some indoor shots but I've had less than satisfactory results with that.

I had ordered 10 each of the reproduction brass cartridge cases from S & S firearms which also arrived Friday. I also ordered a Lee 2 cavity .562 round ball mold. Although originally a conical projectile was used, I've read that the gun can be quite accurate with this round ball. I may also order one of the conical custom molds from Accurate molds but since I don't intend to shoot it a lot I may pass on that extra expense.

Initially, I found that only 3 of the 10 cases I got from S & S will actually allow the breech to close. The others are either oversized or over long. I've read on the NSSA forum that this is a known problem. Unfortunately, at the present, there are no other suppliers who are carrying these cases. (Google search) Lodgewood and Dixie appear to have discontinued offering them and Buffalo Arms has been out of stock forever. At $5.50 to $6 each, they weren't exactly cheap either. I'm going to work on one of the oversized cases with a file or even the bench grinder to see if I can correct the case fit issue.

Still, 3 workable cartridge cases should do since they can easily be reloaded at the range.

The .562 ball from the Lee mould is plenty accurate. As for the brass from S&S, it fits mine without needing to file. Let us know how it shoots! Enjoy!!

Get online and look for the plastic hulls they work very well and a lot cheaper.

As I should have explained in my previous post, I had looked for the plastic (Nylon) versions using Google and only Lodgewood comes up. However, when one clicks on the link to Lodgewood, they show as "product unavailable" or discontinued. There are only two other sellers that seem to presently offer a cartridge but both only carry the brass versions, e.g., S & S Arms and Buffalo Arms. However, Buffalo has been out of stock for quite some time plus they get $6.09 each for theirs.

I'm speculating that the demand just isn't that great presently---either that or the pandemic simply put a lot of small niche suppliers out of business. I may call Lodgewood Monday to see if their supplier still exists.

New update: I just got off the phone with Lodgewood. They were the only company producing the Nylon cartridge cases but have since discontinued them for the exact reason that I speculated on. The mold was designed by and belongs to them but the small injection molding company they used went out of business during the pandemic. He mentioned that the company they were using was able to take orders for 20k minimum.

However, in trying to set up an order with other molding companies, all that were contacted wanted a minimum order of 100k. The guy from Lodgewood said that they just couldn't justify an order that large at this point in time. He said that they are still looking because the item was a good seller but just not good enough to warrant placing resupply orders above 20,000 units. Lodgewood is also a bit of a small niche business so one can understand the logic behind all of this.

He indicated they would make an announcement--if and when they are able to restock and start selling the Nylon cases again.

Errrrr.....ummmmmm.....I was the guy, quite literally, that bought up the last of Lodgewood's nylon casings earlier this year. I bought some brass ones, in the meantime, to test. I have only fired the nylon twice....if I decide to spend the big $ on brass, I guess I could sell off the nylon. If anyone is interested, lemme know (send me a PM) and I'll get back to you later on once I've made a decision. Re nylon, I was told you get about 20 shots out of them.
