Real or Faux? Ames model 1862 Light Calvary sword.

Hi all, I've been on your great forum for a while now, and appreciate all the knowledge I've gained over that time.

I have a possible purchase in the works and wanted to gain some knowledge and get opinions on the originality of this sword
All info is greatly appreciated!

Looks good to me. What's on the ricasso on the other side of the blade? It should have US, a date, and an inspector's initials.

The saber looks like an original Ames to me, although it appears that the blade and the brass have been polished. Not sure about the scabbard; if original, it was cleaned and polished also. To me, this would bring down the purchase price. Not good at placing values on sabers in that condition. I'm sure others with more knowledge will chime in. Good luck.

I'm no expert (far from it), but I'm unsure of the year font. I've never seen a font like that. I have 4 swords & sabers made by Ames and none have a font like that for the date.

The digits appear to be individually stamped as not quite in straight line to my eyes anyway

I really appreciate all the input.
Certainly opened my eyes to a lot of possible issues.
I thought it looked to good to be original and not polished or cleaned in some way..
The date fonts are something to be concerned about. I can't imagine that it's a reproduction. Definitely puzzling to me.

Again, I can't say for certain, but it almost looks like the US and the year have been restamped. With more time I can look at my copy of Thillmann's book to try to find Ames examples with a similar font.

After looking again at the picture of the U.S. and 1862 stamp, I agree that they do look like they were restamped, especially when compared to the inspector's initials, which are well worn. The stamps just look too "new." But the Ames manufacturing stamp on the other side looks good to me.

I agree 100 % with you, just seems strange that one side would be in near perfect condition and the side were the date is would be worn so bad it would need to be restamped

as others say I also have never seen the date stamped like that. Something is off, the scabbard is way too clean and also the brass hilt but the leather is worn. Could it be a repro, didn't most repro's have a 1862 date? Send your pics to www.azswords.com David will help you out with more info. Or maybe it's original but that side of the blade was worn down so someone went and restamped it.
