The current issue of the Military Collector & Historian Journal of the Company of Military Historians contains an article by Douglas C. McChristian A Modified 1861-Pattern U.S. Army Overcoat. When the Civil War ended the Army had huge numbers of overcoats in storage. The Army had so many overcoats that the Army did not adopt a new pattern until 1876 and old overcoats were issued until stocks ran out. After the Civil War the Army needed some overcoats that provided additional warmth.
In the article McChristian goes into some detail about a Modified 1861-Pattern U.S. Army Overcoat that had a second cape added over the original cape to create a double-caped overcoat which provided additional warmth. These kind of modifications were post Civil War. I had never seen an image of a soldier wearing this style of double-caped overcoat and now know if I see such an image it is likely the image is post Civil War.
