Gettysburg 2016: After Action Reports

I'd hoped more of the ladies would've seen the civilian images, especially those featuring women and children in period attire.

I am REALLY REALLY sorry and disappointed that I missed this display. I had no idea -- especially with time constraints. Pictures of pictures do no justice to the wonder of this display. Had I seen this collection, it is likely that I would have missed whatever and wherever I was supposed to bee, due to the fact that I am the one you can take out just about any collection of anything and I am hooked.

Not likely - I think the reason it was so little seen and appreciated was largely because of timing. Some had already visited the Jenny Wade Room prior to the "official" time for the book sale/signing beginning at noon, while others likely wanted to grab a bite to eat before cash's Take That Hill... tour. There were a very few "lookers" who didn't stop to ask questions and I somehow forgot to mention @Frums

That's so true!! Saturday was one marathon! We came back from Eric's tour 15 mins before noon but had only time for hastily buying two books and a quick look at your ambrotypes, not even at the Soldbuch and Wehrpass you wanted to show me! Pity! Then we had a quick bite and almost ran to cash's "Take that hill ..." tour, arrived two minutes late and all were already gone. But we were lucky that @LoyaltyOfDogs was a bit late too, but knew where to look for the group so that we could eventually join them. So there was no time for a closer look, I'm so sorry!

No big deal - I realized at the time the schedule was at least a bit crowded calling for people to "rush" a bit from one event to another, one reason I decided to forgo Take That Hill... A monument I saw a few days later in the National Cemetery at Antietam naturally made me think of you, however:

I had been to Antietam before Gettysburg, but missed that one, thank you! But I saw all the places you mentioned before, Rohrbach's Inn and the Bavarian Inn. In fact we went from Antietam to Gettysburg via Catoctin Mountain and probably saw all the places you saw, too.

Short question: has anybody NOT had his/her likeness taken with Genl. Longstreet and his pony.
Maybe I'll start a new thread, "Me and General Longstreet". Might be fun to see so many of us posing at that particular spot... not necessarily that weekend, but in general.

I have never had my photo taken with Old Pete and his carousel pony. Not a big fan of his monument. I like Old Pete but not his monument.

Bee, really enjoyed your lucky suitcase story. For me, it appears my NAVY baseball cap did the trick. Heavy rains stopped twice while I drove back to New York on Monday. Had an awesome time at Battlefield Harley too.
My one regret is that I had so little time to talk to rebforever, he is a great guy and loved his sense of humor too. He said I was o.k. for a "yankee".

Yeah, me too. I somehow missed a number of folks I really wanted to meet even though I went to both evening get-togethers, the book signing (but was occupied there a while with James' collection), and two tours. There were a few I only met because I just happened to run into them (not literally) out on the battlefield. I'm glad we at least got to say hello.

I know the wife and I didn't stick around too much for the tours and meet 'n greets, but I very much appreciated the invitation. Once we got there, it became apparent that I had so much to see and do, but not enough time for this group's activities also.

• I realized I wanted to walk as much ground as I could, yet still keep my wife interested. She ended up being a real trooper and getting into it, to the extent of wondering what book might be readable for her as a CW beginner (very).
• I walked quite a few of the fields by myself; Devil's Den and the Wheatfield brought out the most emotion.
• I was caught off guard when the guide and I both teared up pretty heavily on the driving tour near Seminary Ridge.
• I was surprised at how big and small at the same time, the battlefield was. Devil's Den even seemed claustrophobic. Little Round Top was a lot steeper than I realized.
• Sickles was a certifiable idiot for moving out so far. I didn't realize just how far until I stood on the ground.

Before we left home, I posted to Facebook:

Traveling to Gettysburg today to walk through the shadows of Meade and Lee, leave my footprints on the fields of Hancock and Pickett, and smell the same dust as Buford.
I'll watch the same sun rise over Cemetery Ridge as Gibbon, Hays and Cushing. When I climb the rocky hills of Chamberlain and Hood, the wind will whisper in my ear - Longstreet, Stuart, Reynolds.
I'm going to touch hallowed ground, and listen to the echoes of Lincoln.​

I wish it hadn't taken 10 years to get there, but it was one of the best vacations ever. My wife even commented that it almost seemed anticlimactic and boring to lay on the beach for so many days after we left the battlefield.

Lol, I say a month. I've never spent this much time with people I've hated to leave. Really, it still amazes me what great people we have here. Awesome is all I can say!

I love battlefield Harley. I bought the current ridding jacket I now wear there plus many tee-shirts. Don't worry the truth is @Rebforever is a closet Yankee lover. Marshall be nice.

Oh @PeterT is now a charter member and simply must attend all CWT talk functions as well as @Frums. I can't wait to plan the next one. @cash, @Eric Wittenberg and the rest of the gang need to shoot me Idea's. Actually Eric has already done so. I'm investigating the logistics as we speak. We also have a lot of interest in Shiloh and @7th Mississippi Infantry is offering help there. My goodness there may be career opportunities here. lol
