Photos from the Zoar Reenactment on the 18th and 19th. Good to spend time with the 1st Ohio Battery A again... our younger members turned out for this event and we made a really excellent gun crew. I'm hoping that we have more chances to work together in the future! I also really enjoyed helping make the rounds for the gun this time around. I managed to christen my new thumbstall, finally! I bought two a while back actually but the events of last year precluded the one I bought to actually use, not just as a prop, for a long time.
The battery did well, we preformed all the demonstrations for the public of artillery, and the always spectacular night fire event. We also did well the second day of the battle, where the galvanized artillery of ourselves and a NY battery pulled off a perfect simultaneous firing of our guns at one point!
I got to wear my new broad brim hat again, which I was quite happy with, and also set up the dog tent I've spent the summer working out how to put up in just the right configuration (and I keep getting positive comments on it!). I also got a new pocket watch, and a tam-o-shanter but that's a story for another thread
.
I only wish we'd been able to have the first day's battle on the other side of town, as I felt like with the position of the battlefield this year I didn't have as much opportunity to explore the village as I would have liked. I still wish we were camped *in* the town... that levy is bad ground to try and put a tent on, and it seems unfair the South are always seem to get the best campgrounds!
I do hope that we get more artillery turnout in 2023... it was a bit awkward being the only Union artillery! But, in fairness, we were probably down to a realistic proportion of artillery to infantry. What with all the craziness of the last two years, it was mostly just good to be able to do the Zoar event again. Overall, it was just about the best birthday one could have (dear god, though, how the heck did I get to be 27!?).
