Looking for a solid Federal infantry outfit with a good mix of younger folks (we have members as young as 12), experienced hands, and a focus on doing things the right way without turning the hobby into a second job?

We portray the 28th Massachusetts, the hard-fighting Irish regiment in II Corps, at parades, living histories, and larger events such as our annual Gettysburg battlefield weekend, where we camp near the Pennsylvania Monument, close to where the original cast and crew set up camp.

We are a long-standing Union infantry living history group based in Virginia (just celebrated our 30th anniversary), with members scattered across a dozen states in the Mid-Atlantic and a few in the Midwest. We hit a mix of larger events and park-based living histories, maintain a steady presence at NPS sites in the region, and offer some unique experiences throughout the year, including long and short marches in full kit, music based events, and live-fire events, as a few examples.

What we try to offer:

  • A welcoming, progressive mindset without the politics. We lean toward events that emphasize history, interpretation, and decent campaign standards. We are not interested in unit drama; we would rather put that energy into getting better at what we do.
  • We strive for a unit culture that is welcoming, squared away, and not overrun by ego. We have a strong military component, with space for those who want to interact with the public and demonstrate camp life, and standard line infantry impressions. Through our sibling organizations, we offer access to an active, progressively minded civilian component. Our goal is to make sure that anyone with a love of history and educating the public has a place, either with us or with our friends and partners in the hobby.
  • Common-sense authenticity. We care about doing a solid, period-appropriate impression, but we are not out to nitpick every button someone shows up with on day one. If you are willing to learn and improve, we will meet you more than halfway.
  • As a long-standing unit, we have a war chest of loaner gear to support newer reenactors. If you are just starting out, we can help with loaner kit, help you prioritize purchases, and keep you out of the "buy it twice" trap. Nobody expects you to arrive fully kitted on day one.
  • We have an active musician component, with special events focused on teaching proper techniques, songs, and gear through instruction, jam sessions, and music musters. We also recently acquired an original bass drum that our musicians with the relevant skills and knowledge can use at events.
  • We actively coordinate and host events with an active civilian component, who are like-minded in approaching their impressions and guidelines with care and authenticity.
We are a fully functional field company, and a member of the Third Regiment, with an organizational structure focused on processes, not personalities. The fact that we have existed since 1985 speaks to our ability to adapt with the times and through changes in leadership. We drill, we work on doing company-level maneuvers correctly, and we put in the effort to look like something other than a gaggle. You will be expected to pull your weight, but we also recognize everyone has a real life and family outside the hobby.

If you are in looking for a Federal home, or if you are already in the hobby and just want a company that takes the history seriously without taking itself too seriously, feel free to message me here and I will be glad to talk details, events, and what getting started with us looks like, or visit our recruitment page, or various social media sites to get a better idea of what we do.

That's awesome and much appreciated!

We don't get a chance to hang out with them very often, we have sent some folks their way that reached out due to our socials that were from their area

Our unit was actually started after one of our original cast and crew moved from the NE area and was involved with the 28th up there.

I was researching a guy from Co C who was killed at 2nd Bull Run. I haven't been able to find anything detailed regarding the 28th at the battle. I know they suffered heavy casualties. Do you know of any resources or accounts of the 28th at 2nd Bull Run? Thanks.

I don't have anything on me, but we have several guys who have done some fantastic research on the 28th's various movements and campaigns, I'll reach out to them to see what they have

Thanks! Really appreciate it.

Did you guys used to sponsor the Fredericksburg event that used to be in December? That was an enjoyable day trip.

We did, yeah. Fredericksburg nor the NPS in the area are all that keen on anything Civil War related anymore, unfortunately. COVID killed the last of it when Yankees in Falmouth was cancelled and never came back. A lot of fond memories, especially the 150th with the pontoon bridges

edit: I wouldn't say NPS isn't keen, just scaled back the size and frequency of the events, there's still things that go on there several times a year.
