While commander of the Potomac River Flotilla from Dec.1861 to June, 1862 he maintained Union control of the Rappahannock River as well during McClellan's Peninsula Campaign.Hisships destroyed Southern bridges, captured 9 Confederate ships and burned 40 schooners. Wyman was promoted to commander on Jult 16, 1862 and was transferred to the James River.The following October he transferred to the West Indian Squadron.
