It was his regiment that saw the 82% slaughter at the infamous Cornfield at Antietam.The "bad health" mentioned in his reason for resignation in 1864 was rumored to be syphilis.


I have read that he left the army due to PTSD and then joined the 8th Texas Cavalry as a Captain.
