His Co. K that he was captain of was first known as the Mobile Rifles.Then later the "Woodruff Rifles" (named after him) became part of 21st Alabama.

The 36th Alabama that he was Lt. Colonel of helped in the defense of the Oven Bluff shipyard on the Tombigbee River. He was made a full Colonel on March 14, 1863.

Before his retirement from the army due to his leg wound, he was being recommended for promotion to brigadier general. There is a tribute to him in the May 27, 1869 Mobile Register about his being killed when a wall collapsed on him. It states that "forgetting his own safety he rushed into a burning building to save the property of a fellow citizen".He died 5 years to the day after his wounding in 1864.
