1861 – 1862: Lt. in the Confederate States Infantry​
Adjutant for 1st​ Kentucky Infantry Regiment​
1862: Volunteer Aide on General Holmes Staff, Seven Days Campaign​
1862: Volunteer aide to his uncle Brig. General Henry Wise​
Lt. and Ordnance Officer assigned to Brig. General Taylor's Brigade​
Captain and Ordnance Officer, as well as Assistant Adjutant Inspector General, served under Generals Stevenson, and Cumming​
1863: Captured at the Battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi​
1864: Wounded during the Battle of Resaca, Georgia​

1865 – 1870: Attorney in Richmond, Virginia​
1870 – 1889: Commonwealth Attorney for the City of Richmond​
1881 – 1889: United States Congressman from Virginia​
