Although he was personally opposed to secession he joined the Confeceracy and served in the cavalry ( he succeeded the wounded Fitz Lee) or as a Congressman. He was admitted on opening day (Nov. 7)of the second session and his resignation from the army was accepted on the 9th. He sat on the Committee on Military Affairs, where he soon became known as a friend of the military and an opponent of Jefferson Davis.

At 3rd Winchester he succeeded the wounded Fitz Lee in command of his division. It was this division he was commanding when he resigned to take his seat in the 2nd Confederate Congress.
According to the accompanying newspaper article Wickham did not relinquish his commission or command of his brigade after taking his seat in Congress.

Thanks for the post. The name sounded familiar so I did a little research, and discovered that we are cousins 9 times removed (whatever that means) on my fathers side of the family. It looks like I need to make a trip to Hanover and pay my respects.
