The best mustache and goatee (Forrest had a chin beard) goes to John Hunt Morgan. For that matter, he was probably the best looking guy on either side! (And one of the few who could rock a kepi!)

Aha. Now you see my frustration. It's given in several sources as Ben, although I'd have to say....."Really?"

She's just certain it's Cleburne. I don't think she's looked at as many mustachioed generals as I have. (I have to be nice to her--I was once engaged to her son, who's since died.....urgh.....so I can't just come out and go...."Look, Joyce, it's not the same guy!" I thought perhaps if I could figure it out definitively, I could just name the guy and leave it at that. Obviously our Texas barbers weren't as skilled....

Yeah, I don't know what her deal is but that's totally not Cleburne. Cleburne had much coarser features in addition to being more swarthy, black Irish as they used to call it, like my grandfather. Admittedly I had no idea it was McCulloch, but it sure isn't Cleburne.

She's from Stephenville. They think Cleburne hung the moon. I don't know why they don't like Granbury. Heck, she may be in the Granbury chapter! I need to look!

Looks like the real version of the idealized guy in the OP. That IS some kind of painting or drawing, not a photograph, and as such, it's got some artistic license going on; McCulloch is being shown at his best. Look at the shape of the nose. That really gives it away. I'm convinced now.

I kept wondering if it wasn't taken from something during the Mexican War...he looks much younger. That would explain the difference. It's definitely an engraving for the papers (the one I used).

Why couldn't I just use Henry and get it over with? Ah well.

That's not a bad hypothesis. Allowing for differences in a drawing/woodcut it seems to match his features better than any mentioned so far.
