I don't follow you. Custer's division attacked Early at Waynesboro and strongly defeated Early who had somewhere around 1800 men with the majority captured. He made it to Richmond and was given a job in South West Va. and there was so many people complaining about him General Lee relieved him of duty. Then he slowly worked his way across Country and went to South America.

Look at the composition of that 1,800 man force, and then find out where the other regiments and batteries that had fought under him earlier against Sheridan went (I'd post the OR information myself, but I'm about to be busy for a few hours).

Exactly. No credit to Sheridan for finishing off Second Corps, Army of Northern Virginia as a fighting formation as far as the Valley Campaign of '64 went - it was still able and willing to fight.

Well, the full story about Whistler's dead fisherboys may or may not be totally true, but like all good stories there is a kernel of truth in it! Here's the first drawing he got in dutch for:

I don't find any of these examples to be "offensive". As for intriguing, the Whistler case is one of the funniest stories I ever heard about. Too bad the engineer who built the Tacoma Bridge did not study under Whistler, either that or Whistler's instructor at the Academy should have had a sense of humor.
