The answer depends on if we look at the man or the firearm inventor.

Dr. Edward Maynard was one of the nation's most prominent dentists. Practicing in the Washington area he had many politicians as his patients. He invented ground breaking dental methods and instruments. Despite his life-long commitment to dentistry, many Civil War and firearm fans will remember Maynard for his 23 firearms- related patterns.

Dr. Edward Maynard's interest in firearms might well be traced to his single year at West Point in 1831 where he was forced to resigned due to health related issues. On 1845 he invented his famous Maynard primer tape system. United States and other nations were interested in this primer tape system. The civilian firearms market showed some interest as well. In the end the Maynard primer tape did not prove overly practical in field conditions.

If there were questions regarding the Maynard primer tape system, I am not sure the same could be said about Maynard's simple lever-operating breechloading rifles and carbines. The unique Maynard metallic cartridge used in these was an important development.

Some Southern militias had purchased Maynard weapons and these were used during the Civil War by Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi. Often a weapon of choice of sharpshooters. The fact that the Maynard metallic cartridges could be reloaded many times which was an advantage for the Confederacy.

Maynard's were well made weapons and new civilian models came out after the Civil War. Maynard target rifles were somewhat popular.
