The "other" Wallace at Shiloh. Just after being promoted to brigadier general (March 21, 1862) he assumed command of General Charles F. Smith's division. Smith had to hand over command because he was injured in an accident while boarding a small boat on April 2, 1862. Smith's leg became infected which resulted in his death 23 days later.

The Martha Dickey that he married was the daughter of his law partner, Theophilus Lyle Dickey. He had planned on studying law with Abraham Lincoln but joined Dickey instead. Dickey was also friend of Lincoln's and eventually wound up as a justice of Illinois Supreme Court
