So the cannon in front of the old drug store, listed as 9" Dahlgren being a "C.S.A. Naval gun" is really a Federal gun out of the Lum House battery?

I have never looked at the markings on the gun to see where and when it was manufactured, but I suspect that it was manufactured before the war. It was in one of the CS River batteries, and the Union occupation forces mounted it in the Lum House battery.

You know I have always wondered with high tech photographic tools, whether you could blow this photo up and reveal any signs of batteries. I don't know anything about high tech photography. Maybe some one on the forum knows. It would be fascinating.

That's one,the 42 pounder at Navy Circle is another,as is the 10 inch at South Fort. These cannons are not in the Park proper,and cannot be watched as close as the others. The Park has come up with rules prohibiting sitting on cannon and monuments, because of the destruction brought on by such acts. When I was a kid,it was a tradition to get your picture taken while sitting on a cannon,or on a monument. Many parts were broken off,especially on the bronze ones. The Park has hidden cameras set up now to catch people in the act.

Yes, but soldiers in the Vicksburg garrison were scratching their names on at least one large siege gun during the siege. I was hoping to find the one they told their grandchildren of signing. That is, people probably came along later and joined in the signing.

Apparently I committed some sort of forum faux-pas. I'm sure anyone who is seriously interested in the river batteries during the siege, read my post prior to editing. Is so, shoot me a PM to move forward.

If not, I will try to enjoy the uniqueness of being the only historian interested in that subject, realizing that I can say anything I want and due to lack of interest, I might as well be considered correct Thanks.

Here is my "little outlaw" pictured in Vicksburg: If Park cameras would have picked him up, he might have been the most wanted toddler east of the Mississippi! Fortunately for him, he was not "sitting" on the cannon, but was "wallering" all over it! A technicality of sorts! In this manner, he would have possibly evaded prosecution and would have, I'm glad to think, been able to make it to kindergarten on time with all his crayons and construction paper in good order the next day!

Unlike, I must add, Joseph E. Johnston back in 1863!

I was recently reviewing some photos I took in 2008 and found this:

Apologies for being out of focus. This was posted above the front door of the pharmacy across the street from the gun. If this is correct then the Dahlgren gun was not a "CSA" gun. There were two 9 inch Dahlgren's brought ashore from the Tuscumbia.

Personally I believe it was in Battery McPherson (US) on the old Jackson Rd. during the siege....

I did the same thing at the park when I was their age.

The last time I was at VNMP, the cannon was still behind the monument without any plaque or marker providing any information.

Does anyone know the story of the siege gun behind the Mississippi monument ?

I started doing the math, and realized that I haven't spent any time at the Mississippi monument since about 2006 or 2007.
