After taking sick leave from the Army of Tennessee, just before the major battles of the Atlanta Campaign, He was not welcomed back into that Army. He had upset the Army commander, Gen. Howard ,who had him transferred first to a Reserve unit on the Gulf Coast. Then to command the 1st Division, 13th Corps, Department of the Gulf. He did however win a brevet as major general for Mobile.
