In August 1864 the 3rd Infantry Battalion was consolidated with the 1st and 4th Alabama Reserve Battalions to form the 4th Regiment Alabama Reserves. Underhill served a major, then lt. Col. This is the same unit that became the 65th Alabama Infantry in November 1864 and Underhill was promoted to colonel.
