It stated in one biography that his men ( 2nd Iowa) planted the first U S flag inside of Fort Donelson. He was wounded on the 15th.

Temporarily assumed command of W.H.L Wallace's division at Shiloh after Wallace fell mortally wounded and barely escaped capture.

He was soundly defeated in the 1863 race for governor of Iowa. He was beaten by the Republican in the race, William Milo Stone, another Shiloh veteran.Stone was re-elected in 1865 and also present at Ford's theater when Lincoln was assassinated. Stone was one of the people who helped carry Lincoln to the Peterson house.

In 1864 Tuttle ordered the Roman Catholic Bishop of Natchez to pray for Abraham Lincoln and to recite these prayers publicly. The bishop refused and petitioned Lincoln personally. The bishop was granted the freedom to practice his religion without Tuttle's interference.
