Accompanied Shelby to Mexico to pledge allegiance to Maximillian

1865: Left Mexico to return to farming in Missouri​

1876 – 1878: Constable for Liberty, Missouri​

1878 – 1882: Clay County Missouri Sheriff​

​

Teamed up with Kansas City Police Commissioner Henry Craig to investigate and pursue the James – Younger Gang.​

Became Primary Investigator of James – Younger Gang gaining the attention of Missouri Governor Thomas Theodore Crittenden.​

1882: Outlaws Robert Ford, Charles Ford, and Dick Liddil surrendered to Timberlake on the condition they receive full pardons and $10,000.00 reward money.​

​

1882: Directed by Robert Ford to Adairville, Kentucky so Timberlake could arrest Jesse James' cousin Clarence Hite.​

1882: Detailed a plan he designed for the Fords to apprehend Jesse James in 10 days.​

​

1882: Robert Ford killed Jesse James on April 3rd​, Governor Crittenden paid a majority of the reward money to James Timberlake.​

​

Timberlake's reputation was ruined due to the way Jesse James was killed.​

​

1882: Declined to run for another term as Sheriff in Missouri.​

​

1882: Defeated in the election or County Collector.​

​

1882 – 1883: Successful Rancher in New Mexico Territory.​

1883 – 1890: Deputy United States Marshal for Western Missouri.​

1890: Resigned as Deputy U.S. Marshal after his wife died.​

1890 – 1891: Farmer and worked at the Stables in Lamar, Missouri.​

I read that he was suffering from insomnia at the time of his death from an opiod overdose.This was right after his wife died.

In a 2007 film "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford", Timberlake is portrayed by the actor Ted Levine. Levine can best remembered as Captain Leland Stottlemeyer in the TV show Monk.
