He was an artillery officer until transferring to the Infantry in April 1864.

The amputation is noted in just about all biographies. In some the reason is given as a result of a wound he received in the Mexican-American War. Other times it's stated a puncture wound to the leg became infected and resulted in the amputation. His dropping out of West Point was probably due to the humiliation of not being able to march, drill, or ride horseback.

While supervising the defenses of Knoxville he was a brigade leader in General Jacob Ammens division.
