"Ten More Texans In Gray" by Dr. W. C. Nunn (Hill Junior College Press, 1980) presents an outstanding and vivid brief biographical accounts of ten Texas Generals who fought for the Confederacy. It is a companion volume to the earlier book "Ten Other Texans In Gray" that was also edited by Dr. Nunn. The ten Generals brief biographies and wartime service are:
- John S. "RIP" Ford
- Thomas Green
- Albert Sidney Johnston
- Samuel Bell Maxey
- Ben McCulloch
- Oran Milo (O. M.) Roberts
- Lawrence Sullivan "Sul" Ross
- Henry Hopkins Silbey
- Benjamin Franklin Terry
- James Webb Throckmorton
A few of the generals in the book are well known to Civil War students and scholars such as Albert Sidney Johnston, Ben McCulloch, and Benjamin F. Terry. However, the book contains the brief biographies of lesser known Texas Confederate General such as O. M. Roberts, Sul Ross, and James W. Throckmorton.
Each of these generals played an important part in the Confederate Army. General A. S. Johnston was killed at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862, B. F. Terry was killed in action in 1862 and leadership of "Terry's Texas Rangers" was transferred to another officer.
Dr. Nunn who taught U.S., Texas, and Civil War history designated individual members of his class to write the brief biographies of the generals and the brief biographies are outstanding, accurate, and have excellent end notes. Published in 1980, this great volume is a must have for anyone interested in Texas Confederate history and leadership, pre-Civil War and post-Civil war history of Texas. The generals played an important part in Texas and Confederate history and this outstanding book is a great tribute to the leaders of the Texas Regiments and Brigades and is a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED read!
