Starting a unit

Usually, the practice of starting a reenacting unit is done by a reenactor who has some experience in his or her group. I live in Central GA. My unit falls under the command of the Georgia Volunteer Battalion. Which in itself is a larger group. The company commanders usually get together and plan the years events in advance along with the logistics for each event during the year. My advice would to be to contact a reenactor group as close by as possible, and get advice. If you are in the Washington D.C. area, I would imagine a group affiliated with the "Army of Northern Virginia"

Good luck. :)

Have you reenacted before?... What type of unit are you seeking... US, CS, Mainstream, Campaigner.... not sure yet....

"Based in" is a fairly relative phrase as a generalized region..... Unless a group has limited itself to close in Living History programs only... where a given unit may be based is usually a secondary issue these days... Events scattered across the mid-atlantic region and beyond.... most groups do a bit of traveling to events anyway... So where it may be based in tends to not be that big a deal.... Heck my unit technically based in Virginia... had some members in it that lived in Ohio, Illinois and Mass.... Of course they might not have came to the small local programs... but were there for the larger stuff.... A host of different groups around Northern Va, Maryland, and Pa not that far from you.... May be a feasible consideration to start...
