On page 290, of American Military Shoulder Arms, volume 3, Moeller in discussing the markings on the M861 Springfield, says that "BEHIND TRIGGER PLATE: One or two initials in block letters". On page 327 he says that on the stock of the M1863 there are "one or two armory subinspectors' initials in block letters" behind the trigger plate.
The Whisker, Hartzler, and Yantz book, 2nd Edition, shows photographs on pages 26 and 29 that appear to be markings in this position, although the detail is indistinct. I am not sure if what I am seeing in these photos are the markings mentioned by Moeller or not.
The example of the M1861 I just acquired appears to have a mark on the stock behind the trigger plate, but it is poorly stamped and/or worn to the point that I cannot be sure. It appears to be just one latter. I am curious about what block letters were used for these markings and hope I have not misunderstood what Moeller is talking about.
Does anyone have these marks on their M1861, or M1863? And if so, what letters are they?
Thank you all for any help you can provide.
