Officially commissioned colonel on March 20, 1863. Tje "ambush on City Belle" in this biography is referring to an ambush on a Union transport ship named the City Belle near a location called Snaggy Point on the Red River. Most of the 120th Ohio were taken prisoner and Spiegel was mortally wounded by a shell bursting near by.
