To your point about why go thru the expense of having a working Maynard tape primer when there are no rolls of tapes to use with them, back in 2004 when I was doing the research for The Civil War Musket, John G Zimmerman was interviewed at his shop in Harpers Ferry and asked that same question.
His reply was "that's (re)enactors for you...they like to cycle the lock and watch the small parts of the feeding mechanism move."
