There were several comments related to General Longstreet's sideburns in the 1888 photograph I recently posted so I thought some of you would appreciate this side burns collage of General Longstreet along with his young wife, John Bachelder and his not so young wife, and the man whose side burns were so outstanding they were named after him, General Burnside. In my opinion Burnside was the clear winner. After all, it just wouldn't sound right to say, "Nice Longstreets". :bounce:

Sideburns, aka muttonchops, are quite popular these days, increasingly so, it seems, with each new X-Men movie (thank you, Wolverine). But, increasingly, too, they just look grungy. I can't imagine Gen. Burnside, or any of those 19th century gentlemen, looking grungy! The difference seems to be in the sense of dignity with which they are worn -- something, sad to say, almost entirely lacking in our 21st century.

I agree Burnside is the winner. He does look distinguished.

I just don't like Longstreet's sideburns. Just don't look as well on him as on Burnside. I know Longstreet fans won't like this comment. Sorry.
Donna, I'm a Longstreet fan, but I don't like his sideburns either. But at least they did not shy away Helen Dortch (although Longstreet's children might have hoped they would ...)

Remember the syllables were reversed, so we'd have to call them "nice streetlongs" ;)

Too true! I see way too many grungy/unkempt sideburns and various other forms of facial hair. I think too a lot guys grow it and it's just so spotty and not full enough so I think that adds to the grungy situation, too. And here, here! They certainly don't have the dignity and bearing to pull off facial hair like that!
