I'll mention that Lovell's division was roundly criticized for not making their planned attack in concert with the others at Corinth. They had borne the brunt of the first day's battle, but played virtually no part the second day; I wonder if this experience under the massed Federal guns prevented their attack? (@TomP )

It was his chief-of-staff Col. Julius P. Garesche, seen here at left reeling in the saddle behind Rosecrans as his head explodes in this drawing by artist-correspondent Arthur Lumley. The shot also killed the horse of the rider on the ground behind Garesche.
