1862 – 1864: Served in Guard duty as United States Capitol in D.C.​
1864: Served in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia​
1864: Struck in the head by a minie ball at Battle of Spotsylvania.​

1864: Served in the Battle of North Anna, Virginia​
1864: Served in the Battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia​
1864: Led the 1st​ Massachusetts Heavy Artillery in night attack at Petersburg.​
1865: Developed chronic rheumatism from a severe cold he got during the Battle of Weldon Railroad.​
