Sen. David L. Yulee

There was an exodus of Southern Senators from Washington when the Confederacy was forming. Senators from seceded states like Davis, Clay, Chestnut, etc. One we rarely hear about is Senator David Levy Yulee of Florida.I don't know much about him but he was Jewish and really named Levy instead of Yulee. In fact the first person of Jewish descent elected to the U.S. Senate and his father and the father of Judah Benjamin were supposedly first cousins. Wikipedia names him as C.S. Secretary of the Navy. I'm sure Stephen Mallory would be surprised.

Yolee's plantation was I'm Florida. I believe it's still there. That was where he ended up at the end.

I only know this because of the Confederate treasure as I hadn't thought of Yulee in a few years.

There seems to be some misinformation about him out there. One biography states that he as a CS Senator, another says he wasn't. The same one that said he was also states he was Secretary of the Navy.

His name was actually Levy but he added Yulee after his Moroccan ancestors. He added this name right after his marriage to Nancy Christian Wickliffe in 1846. She was the daughter of the ex governor of Kentucky.
