One of our tour members thinks these are mislabeled.
 
The sabre on the left appears to be the common M1860 light cavalry sabre and the one on the right appears to be the M1840 "wrist breaker" or a foreign copy of one. If the one on the left was indeed made by Ames it should show Ames stamp, inspection initials, and the date it was made as well. The history of their capture may be true but the date 1848 might only apply to the one on the right if it is stamped with that date on the ricasso of the blade. It would be interesting to know more details on these two sabres.
