I have a Whitney 1841 rifle. I noticed rust inside the bore can anyone recommend a product or procedure to get to get the the rust of the bore

How much rust? A light coating or has it pitted the barrel? Do you just want to preserve it or are you looking to shoot it?

If it's a light coating of rust, I might try some Kroil penetrating oil on some 4-ought steel wool wrapped around a jag attached to a cleaning rod. Run the oil-soaked steel wool up and down the barrel to dislodge the rust several times over a period of days. The steel wool will not harm the barrel, but it will dislodge the loose rust. At some point when you think the bore has been cleared of rust, flush the barrel with hot soapy water to get the oil out, or better yet use rubbing alcohol in place of water, then dry patch the bore to get it as dry as possible, then run an oil-patch several times through the bore to prevent further rusting. As your running the dry patches through the barrel and you feel rough areas, the barrel is probably pitted, and it may have to be relined to get it in shooting condition

It sounds a bit looney, but a quick brush to loosen any rust then plug the touch-hole/nipple and pour some white vinegar down the barrel and leave for 12 hours. (For a breech-loader - plug the muzzle with a cork and fill from the breech). Empty, and clean with a brush and rag, then oil. The steel wool can be used to polish the bore and will reveal any deeper rusted spots. It does depend on how rusty the bore is but it does work on lightly rusted barrels. Heavy rust means a lot more work - but don't use a Dremel! Immersing in white vinegar also works on the other rusty bits too.
