ETA: The attached screenwriter is Andy Froemke. Here is his undated pitch for the screenplay. Pitch documents are like resumes -- their sole purpose is to get a serious discussion going, that leads to something bigger. So don't take it as given that this is how the film would go. We'll see.

I'll say about time- hope we hear more. One of the best stories out of the war, least told!

How did anyone miss this, for a movie when Talkies were invented? 1862, reprinted in a Chicago paper.

In the 1920s moviemakers probably weren't looking to honor black people.

It's also interesting that the writer writes of "the most intelligent and respectable portion of the African Americans" as if to distinguish them from the rest.
