Road construction

You see reports by both sides of terrible road conditions. Yet I don't see reports of construction or reconstruction. Graded hard surface roads were being built in that era. Did the armies on either side do any graded hard surface road building.

There are many references to army construction of "corduroy" roads, which are nothing more than logs placed side to side over swampy or wet lying ground, and held in place with perpendicular timbers at the roadway edges. This type of road was quick and easy to construct, and especially allowed the passage of artillery and wagons.

With heavy usage how long did they last, so what I am looking for is more durable construction models.

For sure, corduroy roads were not meant to be permanent; the next higher level was a wood plank road, and the best of all would be macadam. I haven't come across any information about any CW army actually building macadam roads, but maybe someone else has.

Thanks, I haven't seen anything about macadam road construction by either side also and I am curious as to why.
