I was just reading about his ankle wound at Jenkin's Ferry. A bullet struck his spur and parts of tbe spur were driven into the ankle. It must have become infected and He lingered for several months and finally passed away on July 6. Lockjaw?

His brother, Gen. Elliot Rice,was wounded 7 times during the war.

Most of his Civil War service was in Missouri and Arkansas but he did partake East of the River at Yazoo Pass.

Before joining up with Frederick Steele's Camden Expedition to support Banks, Rice took part in the capture of Little Rock.

Seems likely to have sepsis or gangrene. A clipping of his obituary from the 21 Jul 1864 edition of the Weekly Ottumwa (Iowa) Courier.

Samuel was an excellent brigade and division commander, and one of the big reasons why Union troops often had much success in Arkansas.
