Question about a sword

I came across this sword and was wondering if anyone could tell me if it is real or a replica? Not sure how to identify it as it has no markings on it that I can see. I read somewhere that the south didn't always mark them. The handle has what appears to be cloth and most I have seen have leather which makes me think it may not be real so I wasn't sure if anyone knew or could point me in the right direction to find out if it was real

To me it looks like an import with a very bad regrip. The stopped fuller says it not CS made.

It is real, an import Model 1840, also known as a wristbreaker. As already pointed out, that's a bad rewrap, maybe done intentionally to look "Confederate". It would have had a leather grip with twisted brass wire.

Welcome to the forum, being it already has a bad grip job on it you can have that fixed and have a pretty nice piece. Check out Tom Nardi's Sword Restoration. He does nice work and not terribly expensive.

I was going to say that the wire on the grip doesn't look right to me. It needs to be twisted. But the real experts beat me to it. However, if it's genuine beyond that part, I think that's great!

I just wanted to say thanks for the welcome and for giving me very helpful information on this sword. I have also reached out to Mr. Nardi to see if he can repair/replace things that are not correct. I think it will be a nice piece of history to pass down.
