It seems as if the consensus is that the slaves who ran away from the confederacy was a loss for it. I submit otherwise, reduced cotton production didn't matter because of the blockade. Not all runaways were able bodied men capable of bearing arms. Finally running away got rid of malcontents who might otherwise stirred of mutiny among the slaves.
If anything, the confederate army should have actively expelled as many slaves from areas of operation as possible to prevent fifth column activity.
