Proper reference

I have heard so many differing references to locations with multiple battles that I am now forced to ask what is proper.

As an example, I believe the proper reference is to say, "The second Battle of Manassas."

I have heard many people whom I figure should know the proper reference say things like, "The Battle of Second Manassas." That is the reason for the question. I am not referring only to the two battles at Manassas. I have heard it both ways for every location I can think of where there were two battles.

Please give me the proper usage and the explanation.

With many thanks!
