One source states that he was not only Lt.Gen. Hampton's uncle by marriage but his father-in-law as well.
Hampton's first wife, Margaret Buchanan Frances Preston was the sister of the John Smith Preston highlighted in the OP. Their father was named Francis Smith Preston.

His daughter Sally (Buck Preston) was a good friend of Mary Chesnut and is mentioned frequently in her diary. It's been several years since reading that diary but I think General Hood had "romantic intentions" toward her.

Hampton's first wife, Margaret Buchanan Frances Preston was the brother of the John Smith Preston highlighted in the OP. Their father was named Francis Smith Preston.
So Preston would have been a brother-in-law instead of a father-in-law to Hampton. I don't think Margaret could have been anyone's brother but I get your meaning.
