Hello all. My great-great-grandmother's older brother was a major in the 162nd New York (killed while leading a charge at Port Hudson). His name is James Bogart. I have many photographs of him, including this one. He is on the right.

I am trying to find out some information about the person on the left. On the back of the photo are some words and I was hoping to see if anyone could help me figure out any info about his uniform that may help me decipher the words on the back of the photo.

I think the top line says 'Major Bogart' and I think the first word on the second line is 'with' but I can't make out the rest.

Any info that describes the person on the left would be helpful. I appreciate it. Thank you.

The officer on the left (image appear to be reversed) Seems to wear a private purchase dark blue sack coat. It seems to be a fairly long sack coat with pocket (possibly with flaps) on the skirts. He wears dark blue trousers and boots. The coat seems to have rather wide sleeves at the elbows.

This is difficult. "With" or "at?" Maybe @lelliott19 or @AndyHall can help? It is a nice photo. Can you post more of him?

you are lucky to have such heirlooms.

I think the second word on the second line looks like "Col" which could be the rank of the man on the left (although his shoulder boards look like a Major; could have been an earlier rank, though - i.e. he could have got promoted after the photo). Maybe check Colonels for the 162 and see if a name seems to fit the script. Just a thought.

I wonder if the illegible characters prior to "Col" on the back of the image might not be "Lt", making the rank Lt Col?

According to: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/5788367/justus-wardwell-blanchard
this image is of (then) CPT Justus W. Blanchard 3rd NY Inf. {photo was posted to find a grave by our very own @Mike Serpa }
Later served as Lt Col in the 162nd NY. https://dmna.ny.gov/historic/reghist/civil/infantry/162ndInf/162ndInfMain.htm This could account for the oak leaf(?) on the shoulder board...had not yet made full Col.
Does he look like the gentleman on the left of your photo?

Very nice image @gnatfish . I worked on this some the other day when you first posted it up. I cant read the name clearly but agree with @Mike Serpa that it looks like it says "with Col ___________" I went through the roster and then looked to see if I could find images. I found the Blanchard and Benedict images but dont think it is either of them. Looks like @treebie2000 has ruled out Vandenburgh as well, although I'm not familiar enough to know what regiments were brigaded with the 162nd NY. Perhaps someone will come along with more information that will lead to an identification. Im so sorry I cant be of more assistance.

Blanchard is sitting on the fence and Bogart is standing? The picture looks like Blanchard. I just don't see Blanchard's name on the back of the photo. I hope @gnatfish would post another photo of Bogart.

That's exactly why I asked if they could post another photo!
Blanchard is sporting that magnificent mustache in his earlier photo. Matches up pretty well with the gentleman seated on the rail.
One might could make a case for the name being Lt Col Justus ————(Blanchard)?
C'mon @gnatfish , we're chomping at the bit. Give us another picture or two. :help:
