I will have to get the photo and see. Can the gold portion be removed without damaging the image? We don't have any experience with this type of photograph. I certainly don't want to compromise the item....

As I've said, I'm pretty certain this is an ambrotype and it appears to be exhibiting the same sort of scratching from its brass mat as this one of mine which I've removed from its case to copy:

Sorry for the long delay. Here is the photo with the outside removed. Don't know if it really provides any more insight or not. Any and all comments are most appreciated. Thank you all for the previous posts as well!

So is it a tintype @GMSorrel ? Like is the image on a thin sheet of metal or is it on glass?

Certain state forces, such as the Enrolled Missouri Militia were not outfitted with uniforms and weapons and were required to furnish themselves.

Could the man in this photo be trying to do so? That's why it doesn't really resemble other uniforms.

Mofst Common for the EMM was a white band around the crown of the cap or hat and around the armso they could recognized by their fellows,the EMM was not provided much by the State of Missouri to include uniforms this didn't change until after the EMM was more or less disbanded and the PEMM was stood up,do to the prevalence of Paw-Paw Militia in the EMM.

I am stumped, the uniform looks to be too fine in quality and weave to be Confederate, yet as James points out, the plate dictates CW vintage.
