Need a hobby….. badly.

Thinking of trying adult coloring books or paint-by-number kits. Ok….enough chuckling.

Found below offering for a Shiloh battle scene……and I am intrigued.

Has anyone tried one of these? Recommendations for history-related prints? Is there a website where more of these can be found?

Appreciate any guidance and advice.

My younger daughter does paint by numbers to relax but definitely not historical prints so I can't help you there unfortunately. She finds most of her pictures online.

You know, that looks pretty darn good. It looks like a fine first step. I'd give it a go and then try free-hand.

That looks like a nice hobby! I would think it would be similar to painting figures used in war gaming or dioramas. It also reminds me of a pizza kit. With a pizza kit you start out with a set of ingredients and then add or subtract until to get what you want. With painting you can research the original image for accuracy and correct errors or change uniforms and make it a battle with a preferred military unit. Or use non-existent uniforms and weapons and maybe some dinosaurs to give it a Steam Punk twist.

Whatever you do you have to show us the result!

Craigslist and Facebook marketplace are great places to check out if you're looking for prints. I've seen people online go to garage sales or flea markets to find cheap paintings and modify it to their liking. One artist (Dave Pollot) I follow on Instagram will take a very mundane painting but then add in Leatherface from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. You can add your own flare/twist to it. Maybe take a mundane painting and add in some CW elements or scenes to it

Link to artist's page to get what I'm talking about: https://www.davepollot.com/shop

I like that "Exorcist's Therapy Dog" print by Pollot.

If you google "civil war coloring book" you'll find quite a few available. Another option is to find a book with Civil War-period black and white engravings, like from Harper's of Leslie's magazines. Make copies of them, blow them up to the size you want, and color them with watercolors of colored pencils. I've done this in the past and it gives a really good result. Civil War-era people would do the same thing with the original magazine pages; you can still find them in antique stores.

Here's part of an example I did:

Dang, that looks phenomenal.

I've never done one myself but here's something you could try. Search for 'personalised paint by numbers' on Amazon and you can send in pics of anything such as your children or pet's, maybe even a Battlefield or re-enactment.
A friend ordered one and it came with paints and brushes ready to go, came out amazing.
