I grew up in Boonsboro, South Mountain was in my backyard. It looks to me like the two parts were not recovered together, perhaps one half purchased to make it complete. Stuff dug up in the woods around here can be pretty crusty from acidic soil caused by decaying leaves. In fields years of cow pee and cow pies along with fertilizer can produce some really nasty green crust on brass. I see you are in Mississippi, may ask where this being offered for sale. If it's real I can guess who recovered that buckle by the date. I'm curious if a local museum may be selling off excess pieces. If they are I'm glad I didn't donate any of my stuff. Thanks.

It's a guy on eBay from Charles town, West Virginia I passed on it

Thanks, was hoping this place wasn't selling off stuff, https://boonsboroughmoh.org/. The guy who's collection this was was a true collector and historian, he was the town's first metal detecting relic hunter. He was a friend for 60 years.
We visited that museum on the last day last year's CivilWarTalk South Mountain/Harpers Ferry/Antietam Muster.

It actually could have been dug by your said friend the guy claimed it was dug a while ago and he bought it in Maryland with no further info about it. I got Brian Akins opinion on it and he said he would personally pass because he has never seen that particular style dug

If Doug found it it would have never left his collection. If it was real someone got a bargain for the $300 it sold for. I'm leaning towards fake too, if it was out of the ground since 1959 the crud on it shouldn't look so fresh, I would have fondled that plate until all the green was gone:D The lack of province other than bought in Maryland is another red flag. Glad you didn't get stung.

NOOOOO NOT E-BAY AGAIN. Please stop my young man. I'll tell you what I'll put my ex-wife up on E-Bay and you can have her for half the price of that belt buckle. Better yet I'll price her at $5 since you will be spending a lot more (Lawyer) just trying to get rid of her in the end.

It's a shame so many faked repos have flooded the various collecting fields. I admit I aged a repo to match the Virginia plate I dug on Elk Ridge. The repo is displayed with my relics while the real one safely resides in a gun safe. I didn't remove the repo's maker's mark so it won't ever be mistaken for a real one. I'd hate to lose my US plates but would be heartbroken if my Virginia plate was stolen since two great great grandfathers fought for Virginia and may have shared company with the original owner.
