These biscuits have been in my family for generations. They be great to make to serve for your Derby Breakfast.

1/4 cup shortening
5 cups unsifted flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoon soda
2 yeast cakes
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons lukewarm water
2 cups buttermilk

Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water. Let stand 5 minutes. Sift dry ingredients together, cut in shortening. Add 1 cup buttermilk to flour and mix well. Add yeast and remaining buttermilk. Mix thoroughly. Knead on ligtly floured board. Store in airtight container in refrigerator until ready to use. Will keep several days or can be used immediately.

Bake at 425 degrees for 10 minutes.
