Was there any point one the Civil War started where both sides could have negotiated an end to the war, something that both sides could have lived with? I am not sure exactly what a negotiated peace would have looked like, but were the sides ever so tied of the war that some reasonable deal could have been made? I am of the opinion that the diversion of the boarder states would have destroyed any possible negations. For example if Missouri probably would have had to be divided between the Union and the Confederacy, but where would the dividing line go without armed conflicts continuing in Missouri for some time? Another flash point would be Maryland, the Union probably would could not abandon Washington D.C. Certainly Maryland would demand the return of Washington and would have used force to do so. Or am I wrong and Maryland would have allowed Washington to remain in Union hands?
