I'm in Jacksonville NC and am interested in reenacting and firing replica period weapons but dont know where to begin. This looks like a great hobby, any insight on how to get started in finding a reenacting unit would be appreciated. Or if there are anyone local to me drop a line, thanks.

There is... or used to be an authentic unit down in the Fayetville area. THough finding them might be a touch difficult as most of the members were 82nd Airborne men and w/ deployments good lord only knows how easy it will be to contact them.

If I might suggest take a gander over at the Authentic Campaigner and lurk for a while; wouldn't hurt to ask about a unit either. Research... lots & lots of research.

If you lust like to live shoot and dress up in period gear take a look at the N-SSA www.n-ssa.org

Good Luck

NC units

You will find this a real adventure. It is truly addictive but beware. There is a cost. It can be expensive depending how much you get into it. Take your time at first. Find out if this is war you really want. Check into sutlers. Find out what you can expect to pay. The other cost is the event itself and travel and deciding if you stay in a tent or trailer.

But….once you get in, you're hooked. Like I said it's addictive

If you talk to Bill Hartley, he is a good source and is working part-time in a sutler store in Gettysburg.

Also I have a very good friend who uniforms folks. She is very good and cost are some of the best I have seen. I just had a double breasted shell jacket with "chicken guts"& Lt Rank and red artillery piping along with sky blue pants and leg stripes.

The overall cost was $230.

Her web address is;

Good luck

It looks like it could be addictive. Growing up near Manassas it planted the bug in me early. Now I just would like to do something more involving than just read and watching movies. I bought a three band enfield that I've fired a few times on my own just for fun, it's just nice to network with people with the same interests. Thanks.

Devil Dog,
I lived in Jacksonville on both sides of the main gate for many years. I even go back there a few times a year. I know of a local unit in Onslow County that would work for you. Shoot me an e-mail and I will tell you all about it. [email protected]

Go see Chuck Wager out at Flatwoods, He can tell you where to find a musket. Go east down HWY 24. Go till you see the Flatwoods signs and they will take you there.

I'm going to make an obesrvation. For a new guy with no experience in reenacting, it's very difficult to break into this hobby. It appears that alot of the people I've spoken with, present company on this site excluded (everyone here has been very nice), seem to snub newcomers and talk down to them. I'm trying to figure out where this primadona and elitist mentality comes from. Some of these reenactors seem to think they are really in the military or something. again, the people I've spoken with on here have been very nice, but that hasnt been the norm.

You have had some serious bad luck; my own experiance has been hit and miss; I can attest to bad units and when someone starts talking to you like you are an idiot time to look at them and say: "Have a nice day." and walk away. If they can't figure out they are losing worthy recruits... they deserve to lose them. Seriously take a look at the A-C and see if the unit w/ those 82nd boys is still around. Frankly; I'm one of those guys who eagerly welcomes GI's... 1. You know what discipline means, 2. Punctuality isn't just a suggestion. 3. Maturity... militry life is/was not a joke. The worst part is teaching the difference in drill... modern & CW is a whole different critter.

If you would like some good info PM me w/ your email & I'll pass on a boatload that might be helpful.

Good Luck

Join the club. I just got into reenacting 8 or 9 months ago, but it took me a year to find someone willing to take me under their wing. I'm still not sure why anyone would be mean or rude about it, seeing as how this hobby isn't very big to start with.
If I came across this way please forgive me. If thats the case I need to evaluate my attitude.

Welcome to Another New Fish

DevilDog,

Welcome to the hobby and the forums. I'm new to the hobby as well. I've just joined a unit here in WNC and am looking forward to getting to an event. I'm retired Canadian Army Reserves and want to experience some of what it was like on both sides of the ACW. Good luck finding a unit and have fun.

IsleGuy,
Thanks for the welcome. Always good to hear from a fellow NC res. Right now I'm finding it a bit challenging finding a unit but, with perserverance, I'm sure I'll find one soon. Everyone in here is great, been real pleasure talking with all.
